Ukraine: Seeing itself lagging behind in the war with Russia, Ukraine has now started a proxy war against Moscow. Ukraine is now sending GPS balloons laced with explosives instead of drones to attack Russia. Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that Russian air forces destroyed five such Ukrainian balloons. However, neither Russian nor Ukrainian officials have provided many details about these balloons. Russian officials and media have reported suspicious balloon flights over the battlefield in recent weeks. Since the war started in February 2022, the Ukrainian army has been adopting new tactics in war.
Drones are also being used by Ukraine against Russian forces. According to reports from Russian media outlets, Ukraine’s balloons are equipped with GPS modules and explosives. They are difficult to detect and can carry more weapons than smaller drones. It is unclear whether helium or hot air propels these balloons. These balloons are not capable of flying in the air for long. If the balloon is released over a specific area, the GPS module is used to drop explosives, intended to spread panic on the ground and distract Russian air defense installations.
Russia shot down Ukrainian balloons
Russia’s Defense Ministry said three Ukrainian balloons and a drone were destroyed in the Voronezh region. Two balloons were destroyed in the Belgorod region of Russia. Russia also claimed it downed two Ukrainian missiles, 19 rockets fired from multiple rocket launchers and 16 drones during the night. The Defense Ministry also said three drones were destroyed in the Rostov region of southern Russia. Reports said the balloons dropped by Russian air defense forces in the Lipetsk and Kursk regions earlier this week were equipped with mortar bombs. Ukraine is facing difficulties in the battlefield against Russia’s strong army because its military arms support from Western countries has reduced.
Ukraine is facing shortage of weapons
Even in the US Parliament, the package regarding military weapons for Ukraine has not been approved. Ukraine, suffering from a shortage of weapons, is attacking Russia’s rear bases and infrastructure away from the front line. The death toll from a Russian missile strike on an area in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv rose to 18, officials said Thursday, while 78 people were injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to EU leaders on Wednesday night for supplies of air defense equipment. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reiterated calls for help for Ukraine at a meeting of the G7 group of foreign ministers in Italy. (AP)
