It is often seen that women have to face a lot of trouble during periods. During this time, this pain increases further when they have to go to the office to work. They have to face many problems in the office, which they can avoid at home. In such a situation, today there is good news for all those women. The Odisha government has made a big announcement that whether it is a government or private office in the state, women will be given leave during periods.

Deputy Chief Minister announced

Deputy Chief Minister P. Parida on Thursday announced a one-day menstrual leave for women employees of government and private sectors. However, this leave will be optional. Parida also holds the charge of Women and Child Development Department. He made this announcement after participating in the Independence Day program in Cuttack. He said, “Women employees can take leave on the first or second day of the menstrual cycle. But this leave will be optional.”

Oriya girl had raised the demand

Let us inform you that at the United Nations Civil Society Conference 2024 held in Nairobi, Kenya, an Oriya girl raised her voice demanding paid leave during periods. Along with this, women activist of the state Ranjita Priyadarshini also put forward this matter in front of all the representatives in the international conference regarding giving paid leave to women during periods. She argued that women all over the world face a lot of difficulties during menstruation.

In these states, leave is available in advance

Let us inform you that before Odisha, menstrual leave is given in Bihar and Kerala. The Bihar government had made a policy to give period leave in the year 1992. Under this, women get 2 days of paid menstrual leave every month. At the same time, Kerala has made a provision to give period leave to girl students of all universities and institutions in the year 2023.

There has been an uproar on this issue

There has been a demand for period leave in the country from time to time, although this time there has been controversy as well. Last year, the then Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani had said something on this matter that created controversy across the country. Smriti Irani had said that ‘there is no need for leave for periods. It is not a disease or disability.’ Irani had further said that menstruation is a natural part of life and should not be considered as an obstacle requiring special leave provisions.
