Bhubaneswar. In a strange incident similar to the Lakhimpur Kheri case, Odisha Legislative Assembly MLA Prashant Kumar Jagdev allegedly drove his car over a crowd at Banapur in Khurda district on Saturday. Police gave this information here.
The incident took place at around 11 am near Banapur Block Office where indirect election for the post of Block President was going on. Several people and ten police personnel were injured in the incident.
Following the incident, angry people thrashed the MLA, who was first admitted to Tangi Hospital and later shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar. The mob damaged Jagdev’s car and overturned.
Khurda SP Alekh Chandra Pahi while talking to media persons said that the situation is under control now. He said that as per preliminary information, when the BJP-backed Panchayat Samiti members were entering the block office in a rally for the election, the MLAs reached there and tried to ram their vehicle into the crowd.
Police personnel and some people tried to stop the MLA from going into the crowd.
Ten police personnel including Banapur IIC, MLA, a journalist and at least six people were injured in the incident, the SP said. However, no casualties have been reported so far, he said.
Pahi said that all the injured, including the MLA and the IIC, have been sent to Bhubaneswar for treatment.
The SP assured that strict action would be taken against those involved in the incident. Security has been tightened in the area.
In September, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suspended Jagdev after a video went viral in which he could be seen thrashing a BJP leader from his Chilka constituency.
The MLAs are infamous for their ‘indecent’ behaviour. In August 2020, a junior engineer filed a complaint alleging misbehavior for booking a guest house. Earlier in 2016, he was in the media headlines for assaulting a female Tehsildar.
