Severe heat and storm alert in France

France’s meteorological agency has issued a weather warning for Paris and surrounding areas, warning of storms and extreme heat on Tuesday. The weather department said temperatures in Paris and surrounding areas are expected to reach 35C, as the French capital hosts the Olympic Games. With a heatwave forecast for southern France, the agency has issued a “yellow alert”. The alert was issued specifically because “very hot” conditions are forecast overnight across Paris, with the mercury not expected to drop below 22C between Tuesday and Wednesday.

An orange alert, the third highest, has been issued for parts of southern France, with temperatures reaching 40C in some places. The yellow alert level means people should be “careful” of the effects of the heat when playing sports or engaging in other physical activities, the agency said. Olympians competing in outdoor events at noon in Paris and its surrounding suburbs will feel the scorching heat.

Beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, the BMX freestyle qualifier at Place de la Concorde, and the women’s rugby sevens semi-final at the Stade de France are all partially or completely outdoors. Before the Games, some athletes had urged that the schedule be adjusted, citing the physical harm of competing in high temperatures and the risk of heatstroke. Temperatures are forecast to reach 40 degrees in some places.
