According to the report, topics such as gender roles, sexual and domestic abuse are taught in more than six out of ten countries. One of the two countries follows the concept of mutual consent. Contraception issues are included in the school curriculum in two-thirds of countries. Comprehensive sex education (CSE) is a curriculum-based process of teaching and learning about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality, according to the report.
The report states, ‘Sexuality is an integral part of human life. However, if the youth are not provided with the right scientific knowledge, misinformation can lead to problems as they transition from childhood to adulthood.
Young people need reliable information
According to the report, ‘Young people need reliable information to prepare them for a safe, happy and fulfilling life. A balanced and comprehensive approach is needed to provide effective education to the youth and meet all their needs.
The 50 countries examined in the report found that many recognize the importance of sex education in their education plans or approaches, but gaps remain in their legislative and policy frameworks.
