New Delhi. The terrorism that started in Jammu and Kashmir in the 90s is still continuing. During that time, hundreds of terrorists used to enter Jammu and Kashmir after getting training in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) and carry out terrorist activities. The entire Pir Panjal range that divides Kashmir and Jammu was captured by terrorists. In the year 2000, the situation was such that Jammu had become an epic center of terrorist incidents, as is being seen these days.
After the terrorist attacks happening one after another in the recent past and the losses suffered by the Indian Army in them, it seems that the army may start Sarpvinash Part-2 in the coming days. Due to the continuous terrorist attacks in Jammu, the deployment of the Indian Army has been increased. According to the army, an additional brigade has been deployed in Jammu.
3 battalions will operate under the brigade and additional units of special forces have been sent to eliminate terrorists in dense forests. If we talk about numbers, more than 2500 infantry and about 500 special forces commandos will assist the Army’s Delta Force and Romeo Force divisions in CI/CT operations in Jammu.
The special thing is that these 3 battalions have been sent from the 12th Corps of Jammu and Kashmir. If sources are to be believed, the deployment of CAPF has also been increased in the recent days. If we talk about Jammu, then Romeo Force, Delta Force and 26 Infantry Division, i.e. a total of 3 divisions are already deployed in Jammu for counter emergency, while 25 divisions are deployed on the Line of Control adjoining Jammu.
Treatment of terrorists: Sarp Vinash-2
Jammu region lies to the south of Pir Panjal range. When terrorism was at its peak, the army launched the biggest operation till date to stop it, which was named Operation Sarp Vinash. Actually, between 1998 and 2003, Lashkar and Jaish terrorists had made Hilkaka of Surankot in Jammu their base and hundreds of terrorists used to operate from this place. The army started Operation Sarp Vinash on 21 April which ended 10 days later on 1 May 2003.
The operation was spread over an area of 150 square kilometers and was carried out in Hilkaka in the forests of Surankote. It was a division level operation in which 7 battalions and 2 brigade headquarters took part. 6 units of 163 Infantry Brigade led by 9 Para and 12 RR Sector were involved, which included 2/4 Gurkhas, 19 Garhwal Rifles, 16 and 20 RR.
When the operation was started in the forest, it was estimated that about 100 terrorists would be hiding in Hilkaka. In the entire operation, 65 terrorists were killed and more than 60 hideouts were destroyed, in which a large amount of weapons and ammunition were recovered. This included 20 AK-47s, 5 PIKA guns, two sniper rifles, grenade launchers, self-loaded guns and 45 kg of plastic explosives along with radio sets and rations for 2 weeks for 500 people. Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 was also used in this operation. If we talk about the number of terrorists at that time, then there were 3000 to 3500 terrorists present in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 80 percent were Pakistanis.
Pakistan was spending approximately Rs 80 crore on these terrorists. Apart from this, 2000 terrorists were present in PoK to infiltrate and it was spending Rs 20 crore to maintain them. That means Pakistan was spending Rs 100 crore to carry out terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Pakistan is still spending money like water on terrorists, but the Indian Army has only one solution against Pakistan and its terrorists, Operation Sarp Vinash-2.
