Parliament Session LIVE: The Opposition on Thursday opposed the introduction of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, with Congress MP KC Venugopal calling it “draconian” and an “attack on the Constitution”. Soon after Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sought permission to introduce the bill, Venugopal – who had submitted a notice to oppose its introduction – accused the government of violating freedom of religion and attacking the federal system through it.
At the same time, opposition parties will raise the issue of wrestler Vinesh Phogat being disqualified from the Paris Olympics, as her weight was found to be 100 grams more just before the gold medal match. On Thursday, the opposition created a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha over Phogat’s disqualification, due to which the Chairman and Deputy Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar left the Upper House for some time.
When he returned later for Question Hour, Dhankhar described the conduct of opposition MPs as “unprecedented” and “strange”. Phogat created history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to enter the Olympic final of the sport before being disqualified. Phogat has filed an appeal against her disqualification in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), saying she should be awarded a joint silver medal.
