NDA was formed in 1998
In 1998, the BJP again emerged as the single largest party and this time managed to form and run a coalition government. In 1996, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who ran the government for 13 days, again became the Prime Minister. He had the support of all parties like Samta Party, AIADMK, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal. The name of this alliance was National Democratic Alliance (NDA) i.e. National Democratic Alliance. George Fernandez of the Samata Party was the architect of this alliance. He remained the convenor of the NDA till 2008 when he resigned from the post due to ill health.
Formation of National Front under the leadership of Janata Dal in 1989
In 1989, the National Front was formed under the leadership of the Janata Dal to defeat the Congress. Parties like TDP, DMK, Assam Gana Parishad were involved in this. In 1989, the National Front was successful in forming the government at the Centre. It had the support of the Left Front from outside. Morcha’s convenor Vishwanath Pratap Singh became the prime minister. In 1990, VP Singh resigned as PM due to internal strife and Chandra Shekhar replaced him as PM as well as National Front coordinator. However, his government also did not last long. The National Front split before the 1996 Lok Sabha elections.
Formation of United Front under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu
No party or pre-poll alliance got a clear majority in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections. BJP emerged as the single largest party. Then all the big and small parties including Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, DMK, TDP, Assam Gana Parishad, National Conference formed an alliance called United Front to form the government. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu became the coordinator of this alliance. The United Front government was formed at the center under the leadership of HD Deve Gowda of the Janata Dal. The special thing was that he had the support of the Congress from outside. The Deve Gowda government fell in April 1997 after the Congress withdrew support. But after that Indrakumar Gujral of Janata Dal became the prime minister and with the outside support of Congress. In March 1998, the Congress once again withdrew support and the Gujral government also fell.
