Asaduddin’s slogan caused uproar
While taking oath as MP in Parliament on Tuesday, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi raised the slogan Jai Palestine, after which there has been a political uproar. There has been a demand to end his membership and a letter has been written to President Draupadi Murmu regarding this. Regarding this, senior Supreme Court lawyer Harishankar Jain has written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu and demanded that Owaisi’s membership be terminated. At the same time, Union Minister Ajay Tamta said, “… According to the constitutional process, an MP will read only as much as he is told… We have opposed this. The Speaker assured that only the duration of the oath will be recorded, nothing before and after that… Praising another country in the Parliament of your country also tells a lot about your mentality.”
Owaisi gave clarification, know what he said
Let us tell you that amid this political uproar, Asaduddin Owaisi defended his remarks while talking to reporters outside Parliament after the swearing-in. He said, “Other members are also saying different things. I said ‘Jai Bhim, Jai Mim, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine’. How is this wrong? If there is any provision for this in the Constitution, tell me. You should also listen to what others said. I said what I had to say. You should also see what Mahatma Gandhi had said about Palestine.”
When Owaisi was asked the reason for mentioning Palestine, he said, “They are oppressed people.” Owaisi took the oath in Urdu and expressed solidarity with the conflict-affected region of Palestine and also praised his state, Telangana and raised the AIMIM slogan for Muslims. His slogan drew strong reactions from the ruling party members, following which the Speaker removed it from the official record.
Demand for action against Owaisi
The presiding officer at the time, BJP leader Radha Mohan Singh, assured the members that no statement beyond the formal oath would be recorded. Pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab also confirmed that officially only oath or affirmation was being taken into account. Meanwhile, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has written to the Home Minister’s office objecting to his speech and demanding action in the matter. She also requested the Pro tem Speaker to ask Owaisi to take oath once again.
