New Delhi. Expressing grief over the incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, more than 70 Padma award winning doctors have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding immediate implementation of a special law to deal with violence against health workers. They also demanded implementation of better security protocols in hospitals.
Renowned doctors like Ashok Vaidya, Harsh Mahajan, Anoop Mishra, AK Grover, Alka Kriplani and Mohsin Wali demanded PM Modi’s “immediate and personal intervention” to deal with this “dangerous” situation and suggested that the Centre immediately bring an ordinance to ensure “strictest punishment” for those involved in violence against healthcare workers.
There have been widespread protests across the country after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Eminent doctors also urged strict enforcement of existing laws and increased security measures in hospitals and medical institutions. Those who wrote the letter also include former ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava and former AIIMS, Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria.
The letter to the Prime Minister said, “We Padma awardee doctors are writing to you with deep concern and pain about the horrific incident that took place recently at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College. As the head of our country, we appeal to you for immediate and personal intervention to remedy this terrible situation.”
The letter said, “We stand in full solidarity with the victim’s family, whose pain and loss is unimaginable. We also extend our full support to the medical community, which is facing such violence during their work. The safety and dignity of healthcare professionals must be protected with the highest priority.”
