Pak PM Shahbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping in their meeting reaffirmed consensus on upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and pushing forward high-quality development of the multi-billion dollar project in the second phase. Sharif’s five-day official visit to China began on June 4. The two leaders on Friday held in-depth talks at the historic Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two leaders were accompanied by ministers and senior officials.
This was Sharif’s first meeting with President Xi after assuming office this year. According to state media, the two leaders agreed to upgrade the CPEC and push forward the development of the mega project in the second phase. The CPEC links the Gwadar port in Pakistan’s Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province. It is a flagship project of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The BRI is seen as an attempt by China to expand its influence abroad through infrastructure projects funded by Chinese investments across the world.
