Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan has given a big decision regarding the SIC, the PTI-backed party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The Election Commission has said in its reply filed in the Supreme Court that the Sunni Ittehad Council (SRC), supported by Imran Khan’s party PTI, is not eligible for reserved seats. This information was received from media reports. The Election Commission of Pakistan on Saturday filed a reply in the Supreme Court to the petition of the Sunni Ittehad Council, in which the SIC had filed a petition against the rejection of its claim on the seats reserved for women and minorities in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies after the general elections.
According to Pakistani channel ‘Geo News’, the Election Commission said that reserved seats cannot be allotted to the SIC as the party did not submit the list of candidates for the reserved seats by the deadline of December 24. The SIC is supported by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s (71) Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The commission said that according to the rules of the SIC, no non-Muslim person can be a part of the party. It said, “According to the rules of the SIC, no non-Muslim person can become a member of the party.
The provision against non-Muslims was declared unconstitutional
The provision against the inclusion of non-Muslims in the rules of the SIC is unconstitutional. The SIC is not entitled to reserved seats for women and minorities. The commission said that after the general elections in Pakistan, independent candidates had joined the SIC, after which the Election Commission had decided not to allot reserved seats to the party and later the Peshawar High Court also upheld this decision. There are 70 reserved seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan and the other 156 seats are in the four provincial assemblies. (Language)
