Quetta: Ahead of Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day, suspected terrorists attacked a shop selling the national flag and a house with grenades in Balochistan province. Three people were killed and six others were injured in this attack. The separatist group ‘Baloch Liberation Army’ has claimed responsibility for this attack on Tuesday in Quetta, the capital of violence-affected Balochistan. Just a few days ago, this group had warned the shop owner not to sell the flag and people not to celebrate holiday on August 14. Pakistan got independence from British colonial rule on 14 August 1947.
Six people were admitted to the hospital
Six people injured in the attack on a shop and a nearby house were admitted to the hospital, government hospital spokesman Waseem Beg said. Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir vowed to defeat terrorism in a speech delivered on the eve of Independence Day at a military academy in the country’s northeast.
Help sought from Afghanistan
Asim Munir sought cooperation from neighbouring Afghanistan to stop attacks by the Pakistani Taliban. Meanwhile, the Pakistani army said in a statement that a group of terrorists killed four security personnel in South Waziristan district of the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It said that six terrorists were also killed in retaliatory action by the army.
There have been attacks before
In Pakistan, incidents of attacks on Independence Day have increased in Balochistan in the last few years. Flag shops have been targeted before as well. In the year 2022 and 2023 too, people selling Pakistani flags were attacked.

Many people in Balochistan believe that after the India-Pakistan partition, they wanted to live as an independent country. But, they were included in Pakistan without their consent. This did not happen, due to which the struggle between the army and the people in Balochistan continues even today. There are many organizations demanding independence in Balochistan, but the Balochistan Liberation Army is the most powerful faction. (AP)
