An FIR has been registered against senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla in a case of phone tapping at a police station in South Mumbai. Earlier, the Bombay High Court had granted him relief from arrest in a similar case registered in Pune. Rashmi Shukla is presently on central deputation and posted as Additional Director General of Police (Central Reserve Police Force) in Hyderabad. A police official said that the new FIR has been registered at the Colaba police station under relevant sections, besides the Indian Telegraph Act. The alleged illegal phone tapping took place when Rashmi Shukla was the head of the state intelligence department (SID) in Maharashtra, the official said.

Earlier, Pune Police had registered an FIR against Rashmi Shukla at Bund Garden police station in connection with the alleged illegal tapping of Congress leader Nana Patole’s phone. There was a BJP-led government in the state then. The cyber wing of the Mumbai Crime Branch had earlier also registered a case against unidentified persons and recorded their statements for alleged phone tapping and leaking of confidential documents regarding police transfers during Shukla’s tenure as SID chief. But in this FIR registered under the Official Secrets Act at Mumbai’s BKC police station in March 2021
He was not named as an accused.
Prohibition on arrest till March 25
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Friday restrained the Pune Police from taking any action against Rashmi Shukla till March 25. A bench of Justices SS Shinde and Nitin Borkar said that Shukla should be given protection from arrest till further orders, as prima facie it appears that he was alone named in the FIR. The court took note of the argument of Shukla’s counsel and senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani that though the alleged incident of illegal phone tapping took place three years ago, the FIR of the Pune Police was registered only on February 25 this year. Shukla was posted as the Pune Police Commissioner from March 2016 to July 2018.
