Pig Kidney Transplant News: In America, a pig kidney was transplanted after a woman’s kidney failed, which was widely discussed all over the world. Now, after about 47 days, doctors have removed the transplanted kidney and put the woman on kidney dialysis. Doctors say that the transplanted pig kidney got damaged due to improper blood flow, after which it was decided to remove it. This was the second case of pig kidney transplant. Earlier, a pig kidney was transplanted in a person, who died after just 2 months.
NYU Langone Transplant Institute of New York Surgeons of the University of Pennsylvania performed the feat of transplanting a pig’s kidney into the body of 54-year-old Lisa Pisano. The woman survived with the transplanted kidney for 47 days, but after this the kidney started getting damaged and had to be removed. The woman’s body did not reject the kidney, but the heart pump did not provide proper blood flow, due to which this had to be done. Currently, the woman’s condition is said to be stable and her left ventricular assist device is working. The woman had received this kidney from a genetically modified pig.
According to doctors, the woman’s case was very complicated and her kidney and heart had failed. After this, she was given a heart pump and a pig’s kidney was transplanted 8 days later. Lisa Pisano is the first patient in the world in whose case kidney transplant was done after giving a heart pump. The first patient to receive a kidney from a genetically modified pig was 62-year-old Richard Slayman, who underwent a transplant in March 2024 in the US state of Boston. He was suffering from serious illness and died 2 months after the kidney transplant.
