Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency was known as a Kurmi dominated seat in politics. MP from Kurmi community was elected from this seat seven times. But in the politics of the district, Maneka Gandhi, the younger daughter-in-law of the Gandhi family, entered the Lok Sabha elections in 1989. Maneka, who fielded on Janata Dal ticket, gave a crushing defeat to Congress’s Bhanu Pratap Singh, a veteran of the Kurmi community. After this the political atmosphere of Pilibhit started changing. If we look at the past, Parshuram Gangwar had barely won the election from here on BJP ticket in the Ram wave of 1991. Since then, stalwarts of the Kurmi community contested the elections but could not enter Parliament.
In this Lok Sabha election Samajwadi Party Has woven the fabric of success with the help of Muslim-Kurmi votes by fielding the stalwart of Kurmi community, Bhagwat Saran Gangwar of Bareilly. There are a total of five assembly constituencies in Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency, which include Pilibhit Sadar, Barkheda, Bisalpur, Puranpur, Baheri of Bareilly district.

In Pilibhit district, there are about 60 to 70 thousand Kurmi voters in Sadar Assembly constituency, 70 to 80 thousand in Bisalpur Assembly constituency and about 30 thousand Kurmi voters in Barkheda Assembly constituency. There are only nominal Kurmi in Puranpur assembly constituency. There are about 85 thousand Kurmi voters in Baheri assembly constituency of Bareilly, which is included in this Lok Sabha constituency. There are 30 percent Muslim voters in the entire Lok Sabha constituency.

Kunwar Mohan Swaroop of Praja Socialist Party first won the election from Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat in the year 1957. Kunwar Mohan Swaroop of Kurmi community was the MP of Pilibhit for four consecutive terms i.e. till the elections held in the year 1971. After this, in the year 1980, Harish Kumar Gangwar of Bareilly was elected MP of Pilibhit from Congress. The election of 1984 was won by Bhanu Pratap Singh of Bareilly on Congress ticket.
Due to Ram wave in the Lok Sabha elections held in 1991 B J P Parashuram Gangwar contested the ticket and defeated Janata Party candidate Maneka Gandhi by a margin of 6,923 votes. Overall, MPs from the Kurmi community have been elected to the Lok Sabha seven times from Pilibhit.
Kurmi-Muslim card
From Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency in the Lok Sabha elections held in the year 2004. Samajwadi Party Had fielded veteran leader of Kurmi community, Satyapal Gangwar. Then, SP candidate Satyapal Gangwar stood second after losing to BJP candidate Maneka Gandhi by a margin of 1,02,720 votes. Even then Bahujan samaj party Anees Ahmed Khan of the Muslim community was in the election fray. This time also in the Lok Sabha elections, the same Anees Ahmed Khan is again contesting from BSP from Pilibhit seat. Bhagwat Saran Gangwar of Kurmi community is contesting from SP. What result will the Kurmi Muslim card bring this time, will be known only after the results are declared on June 4.
