New Delhi. New diesel engines will be developed for Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships. It costs around Rs 270 crore. It was approved by the Ministry of Defense on Wednesday. It is an indigenous project.
So far, most such engines are being imported from abroad, that is, this project will strengthen the initiative of self -reliant India. The developed engines will be used for the main propulsion and power generation on the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard ships.
For the use of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, a 6 MW medium -speed maritime diesel engine will be designed and developed. For this, Project Approval Order has been signed under the Make-I category between the Navy and Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited.
The agreement was signed in the South Block in New Delhi in the presence of Secretary (Defense Production) Sanjeev Kumar and Navy Deputy Chief Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.
Under the project, this prototype diesel engine will be developed at a cost of Rs 270 crore. This prototype diesel engine will use more than 50 percent indigenous materials. 70 percent of its funding will be done by the Government of India. The contract also includes the development of a detailed design for 3 to 10 MW diesel engine.
Most of the high -capacity diesel engines were still being imported from foreign original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The project will launch the process of attaining self -sufficiency in the development of marine engine in the country. Important steps have been taken by the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This includes efforts to make technologies indigenous and achieve self -sufficiency in the defense sector. This is an important step towards various such efforts. This will make the country’s indigenous abilities even better.
Along with this, foreign currency will also be saved. At the same time, indigenous technology and construction will also reduce dependence on foreign original equipment manufacturers. This initiative will act as a catalyst for the development of defense industrial ecosystem in the country.
