New Delhi: After the coup in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus is now in charge of the country. PM Modi and Muhammad Yunus are going to meet amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh. It is believed that PM Modi and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus may meet at the BIMSTEC Summit. The BIMSTEC Summit is scheduled to be held on 4 September in Bangkok. Interim Chief of Bangladesh Government Muhammad Yunus may represent Bangladesh. During this time, he may meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi will represent India at this summit.
In fact, Thailand is hosting the BIMSTEC summit next month. The importance of this multilateral organization comprising India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Myanmar has increased in recent years. One reason for this is the inactivity of the South Asian Regional Cooperation Organization (SAARC) since 2016 due to India-Pakistan tension. There is a lot to discuss between India and Bangladesh. Especially after New Delhi’s close aide Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. It is believed that PM Modi can raise the issue of attack on Hindus in Bangladesh in front of Muhammad Yunus.
There are three major concerns for India. First- China’s increasing steps towards South Asian countries. Second- the border with Bangladesh. And third- the treatment of minority Hindus there. China has been trying to expand its foothold in the Bay of Bengal for some time now. It already has ports in Myanmar and Sri Lanka. If Dhaka turns towards Beijing instead of leaning towards New Delhi, then it can increase problems for India. India considers it its area of influence. The second problem is the people fleeing from the chaos spread in Bangladesh.
As of Monday, India has arrested about a dozen Bangladeshis trying to cross the border. These people were trying to come to India to escape violence and political turmoil. Hundreds of people are still pleading at the border for permission to enter India. New Delhi is also concerned about the atrocities being committed against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Hindus are the largest minority community in Bangladesh. They are believed to be a strong support base for Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. There have been many reports of attacks on Hindu homes, temples and businesses after her sudden removal from power and her escape to India. (Input First Post)
