PM Narendra Modi and Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Patongtarn Shinawatra on becoming the youngest Prime Minister of Thailand. The PM said that he looks forward to working closely with her to further strengthen ties between the two countries. Patongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Thai President Thaksin Shinawatra, on Sunday became the Prime Minister of Thailand after receiving a royal letter of support. “Congratulations to Patongtarn Shinawatra on being elected the Prime Minister of Thailand. Best wishes for a very successful tenure,” Modi said in a post on ‘X’.
He wrote, “Looking forward to working closely with you to further strengthen bilateral relations between India and Thailand, which are based on the strong foundations of civilisational, cultural and people-to-people contacts.” Patongtarn is the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold the post after her father Thaksin Shinawatra and aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
Shinawatra became the Prime Minister of Thailand after royal approval
Patongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, became the country’s Prime Minister on Sunday after receiving a letter of royal assent. Patongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, was elected as the country’s new Prime Minister by Thailand’s Parliament on Friday. Former Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin was removed from office by the Constitutional Court two days earlier due to ethics violations. Patongtarn will now replace Thavisin as the new leader of the Pheu Thai Party and will lead a coalition that includes military groups linked to the coup that ousted the party’s previous government.
Who is Patongtarn Shinawatra?
Patongtarn is the third member of the Shinawatra family to take charge of Thailand. Earlier, her billionaire father Thaksin Shinawatra and aunt Yingluck Shinawatra have held this post. Patongtarn has become the second woman Prime Minister of Thailand after her aunt. Thaksin and Yingluck were ousted from power through a coup and had to leave the country, but Thaksin returned to Thailand last year when the Pheu Thai Party formed the government. Patongtarn was given the appointment letter at a ceremony held at the party headquarters in Bangkok, in which senior members of the ruling coalition and her father were also present.
Patongtarn said in Thai – will work with an open mind
Thaksin has no formal role but is considered the de facto leader of the Pheu Thai party. The father and daughter arrived in the same car and were seen driving together, smiling and holding hands. Patongtarn thanked the Thai King, the people and the parliamentarians and said she would carry out her duties with an “open mind” and “make Thailand a place that gives Thai people the opportunity to dream, create and decide their own future.” (Language)
