Prime Minister Narendra Modi
In his address from the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, PM Modi said that implementing a secular civil code and abolishing the discriminatory communal civil code is the need of the hour. He said, “In our country, the Supreme Court has repeatedly discussed the UCC and has given orders many times. Because a large section of the country believes that the civil code with which we are living is actually a communal and discriminatory civil code.”
PM Modi said, “I believe that there should be a serious discussion on this (Uniform Civil Code) issue in the country. Everyone should bring their views. The laws which divide the country on the basis of religion, become the reason for discrimination, those laws cannot have any place in modern society. Now the country demands that there should be a secular civil code in the country.” Amit Shah has already guaranteed that the NDA government will bring a Uniform Civil Code in this term.
Amit Shah had given guarantee during the elections
During the election campaign on May 26, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented for the entire country within the next five years after extensive consultations with all parties. He had said, “Uniform Civil Code is a responsibility that has been left by our constitution makers on our Parliament and the state assemblies of our country since independence. The guiding principles that the Constituent Assembly had set for us include Uniform Civil Code. And even at that time, legal experts like KM Munshi, Rajendra Babu, Ambedkar ji had said that there should not be laws based on religion in a secular country. There should be a Uniform Civil Code. ”
Experiment in Uttarakhand
The Union Home Minister had said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has done an experiment in Uttarakhand because there is a majority government there. However, he had stressed that it is a matter of the states along with the Center. Shah had said, “I believe that the Uniform Civil Code is a major social, legal and religious reform. The law made by the Uttarakhand government should be socially and legally scrutinized. Religious leaders should also be consulted. What I mean to say is that there should be a wide debate on this and after this wide debate, it should be decided whether to make some changes in the model law made by the Uttarakhand government or not. Because someone will definitely go to the court. The opinion of the judiciary will also come to the fore. ”
Civil code will be implemented in just five years
He had said, “After that, the legislatures and parliament of the country should think seriously about it and yes, a law should definitely be made. That is why we have kept it in our manifesto. The goal of the BJP is to have a uniform civil code for the entire country. When asked if this could happen in the next five years, Shah had said that it would happen in the next five years. He had said, “Five years is enough time.”
