Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the landslide-hit areas of Wayanad on August 10. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister will take a positive stand regarding providing central assistance for the rehabilitation of the disaster victims. Vijayan said Modi’s visit to Wayanad on Saturday comes amid the state government’s request to declare the landslide as a ‘national or severe disaster’. He said that following the state’s request, the Home Ministry has formed a nine-member committee to investigate the severity of the disaster and submit a report in this regard.
‘I have already written to PM Modi about this’
Vijayan said in a press conference ahead of Modi’s visit that he has already written to the PM on the issue of declaring the Wayanad landslide a national disaster. “Hopefully, a favourable decision will be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. We have already written to him on this issue and thanked him for the help and support provided so far,” he said. Vijayan also said that the exact number of people killed in the landslide can be confirmed only after the results of DNA tests of human organs and unidentified bodies are received. He said that currently 131 people are missing.
‘The remains of the bodies will be considered complete only when…’
Vijayan said that the remains will be considered a complete body only if 90 percent or more of the body parts are recovered, otherwise it will be considered only a body part. Let us tell you that the search operation is still going on in the landslide affected areas of Wayanad and today a large number of sniffer dogs were deployed at the disaster sites to search for remains buried under the debris.
