Los Angeles: Demonstrations of Palestine supporters continue in various college campuses of America. Meanwhile, the police have arrested more than 2100 people involved in the protest. The police have also vacated the tents set up on the college campuses and buildings occupied by the protesters. A police officer even opened fire to disperse protesters gathered inside a Columbia University administration building, the District Attorney’s Office confirmed. No one was injured in the officer-involved shooting late Tuesday night inside Hamilton Hall on Columbia’s campus, according to Doug Cohen, a spokesman for District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office. Cohen said the shot was not aimed at anyone and that other officers were present at the time but there were no students nearby. Bragg’s office is reviewing the incident.
Joe Biden responded
US President Joe Biden’s reaction to the student protests has also come to light. Biden defended the right to protest, but said ‘order must prevail’. He said, “Disagreement is necessary for democracy. But there should never be chaos while expressing disagreement.” President Biden said at the White House that peaceful dissent is an important part of democracy, but vandalism will not be tolerated. He said that destroying property is not a peaceful protest, it is against the law. He said vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, closing campuses, forcing classes to be cancelled, none of these are peaceful protests.
Police took action
It is noteworthy that, protests by pro-Palestine students shook Columbia University. After this the protest spread to other universities also. Police have also taken action regarding the protests. Not only students but also outsiders are involved in anti-Israel protests. Police have conducted massive raids in Colombia, from universities to hotels and other places. During this period, many protesters including a doctor from New York have also been arrested. These are not all students. According to data collected by ‘The Associated Press’ on Thursday, there have been at least 50 incidents of arrests in 40 colleges and universities of America since April 18. AP
