Chicago: Students in America are continuously protesting against Israel. Now the police and the university administration have also taken a strict stance regarding these demonstrations. In this sequence, the police at George Washington University in Washington DC started removing the tents of pro-Palestinian protesters early on Wednesday. The student-run newspaper GW Hatchet reported that authorities issued a third and final warning to protesters not to proceed in the early hours of the morning. After the warning, the police started action.
‘Rules are being violated’
Taking important steps, the university authorities had warned of suspending the students involved in the protest. The university said in a statement that the university is committed to protecting students’ rights of free expression but this space has become an illegal activity where laws and regulations are being violated. On Tuesday, police removed a tent of pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Chicago before the University of Washington.
More than 2600 people arrested
Tension is increasing between the administration and protesters in America’s universities. Protests at universities began with a campaign beginning at Columbia University three weeks ago. Some colleges took immediate action against demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war. However, some universities, which had allowed the demonstrations till now, lost patience and had to resort to police action. Since April 18, more than 2600 people have been arrested across 50 university campuses. (AP)
