Police took the prisoner home instead of jail, drank alcohol in dry state, just one mistake...

Rajkot. While such scenes are usually seen in Bollywood movies, two policemen in Gujarat landed in trouble for maintaining friendship for their prisoner friends. Two policemen who were taking notorious liquor smuggler Dheeraj Karia to a local court in Gandhinagar in Gujarat’s Amreli district dropped him at his home in Junagadh instead of taking him back to jail. In another case, an undertrial prisoner who was taken to court by a policeman returned to jail completely drunk.

Such open secrets
According to a Times of India report, police officials in Amreli came to know about the leniency shown by the constables who took Karia to Gandhinagar after a restaurant owner lodged a complaint at the police station against two unidentified men who created a ruckus at his hotel on the night of July 24. The two constables had ordered food and one of them had also consumed alcohol. The police complaint states that he quarreled with the waiter, who asked him not to consume alcohol and threatened him. While investigating the complaint, the police scanned the CCTV footage provided by the restaurant owner and found that the two accused were constables Ranjit Vaghela and Nitin Bambhania.

Policeman arrested for drinking alcohol
A senior police officer from Junagadh said that ‘the two were not expected to be in Junagadh that day. They had taken a notorious liquor smuggler to Gandhinagar for a court hearing. While returning, they had to go to Amreli to take the accused back to jail, but instead they went to Junagadh, where the liquor smuggler’s family lived. The escorting policemen gave the accused time to meet his family while they went for food and drinks.’ The Junagadh police arrested Ranjit Vaghela and the man who allegedly provided them liquor.

In another case, an undertrial prisoner, Aavesh Audia, was taken from Rajkot Central Jail to Rajkot for a hearing on July 25. Constable Paresh Vaghela was escorting Audia. When he dropped him at the jail at 5.45 pm, the jail staff found that he was barely able to walk and his breath smelled of alcohol. The medical officer confirmed that Audia had consumed alcohol while he was with the police. Following this, jailor VK Pardhi filed a complaint against Audia and Vaghela.
