New Delhi. Due to air pollution in India, people’s mental health is deteriorating, causing them sadness, difficulty remembering things and reduced ability to deal with life’s challenges. Delhi government has put this matter before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Its purpose is that both the government and NGT are serious about the increasing pollution in Delhi.
Earlier, the tribunal had sought response from various authorities, including the Delhi government and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), stressing the need to analyze the ‘psychological aspect’ of the deterioration in air quality in the national capital. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava said that the Health Department of the Delhi government has filed its reply highlighting various studies showing the adverse effects of air pollution on health.

Took cognizance of the report
The bench took note of the report which provided evidence that exposure to air pollution was worsening mental health in India and leading to depression, difficulty remembering things and reduced ability to deal with life’s challenges. Such problems arise. The bench also included judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel.
More impact on economically weaker people
The tribunal, in an order dated April 2, said the report submitted by the health department also said that air pollution has increased psychological distress among people, especially the rural and economically weaker population. Taking note of CPCB’s reply, the tribunal said that some air pollutants including ammonia, lead, nickel, arsenic and benzo(a)pyrene were not being monitored. The result is that air pollution is increasing further. NGT will hear the case on July 10.
