Turn: Pope Francis is well aware of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He is concerned about the rapidly growing scope of AI and that is why he is going to raise this issue on a huge platform like the G7 summit. Last year, a ‘deepfake’ picture of Pope Francis was circulated, in which he was seen wearing a thick white jacket. Pope Francis will address the G7 leaders on Friday at this annual conference to be held in southern Italy. Francis will be the first priest to address this conference.
What does the Pope want?
The Pope wants to use the occasion to join forces with countries and global bodies that are pushing for stronger safeguards in relation to AI, following the use of ‘generative artificial intelligence’ introduced by Open AI’s ChatGPT chatbot. ‘Generative artificial intelligence’ is a type of artificial intelligence technology that helps create different types of content including images, audio and synthetic data.
Italy’s PM has invited the Pope
The Argentine pope also called for an international treaty to ensure the proper use of AI in his annual peace message this year, saying the uncontrolled development of technology devoid of human values such as compassion, kindness, morality and forgiveness could be extremely dangerous. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has invited Pope Francis and announced his participation. Giorgia knows the pope’s fame and moral authority will have a potential impact on widespread concerns about AI and his priorities for peace and social justice. “The pope is a very special figure,” said John Kirton, a political scientist at the University of Toronto.
