Representatives of the opposition parties’ India Alliance met the Election Commission today regarding the counting of votes to be held on June 4. Several leaders of the India Alliance, led by senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, held long discussions with the Election Commission on Sunday regarding the counting of votes. This is the third time that an alliance of many parties has approached the Election Commission.
These leaders demanded from the Election Commission that before the counting of votes in EVMs is completed, the counting of postal ballot votes should also be completed. Because the process of postal ballots can take the election result from one side to the other.
The Congress leader said that postal ballots are decisive in any election. According to the Election Commission’s rule, the counting of postal ballots will be done first. In 2019, it was clearly said that the counting of postal ballots will start first and then that of EVMs. But the counting of EVMs cannot be completed until the counting of postal ballots is completed.
The Election Commission has changed the rules through guidelines, removing the 2019 guidelines under which it is not mandatory to finish counting postal ballots before the final EVM count.
BJP leaders also met the Election Commission
Meanwhile, it is reported that a delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party also met the Election Commission on Sunday. Many senior BJP leaders including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal reached the Election Commission office.
