A Guernsey-based deep-sea mapping firm has captured gold jewelery with teeth from a prehistoric shark, megalodon. Considering the size of the wreck site, Magellan CEO Richard Parkinson has labeled the discovery as ‘stunning, beautiful and exciting’. He said, ‘People do not know that Titanic is in two parts and the debris between the fore and aft part is spread over 4 square km. The team has mapped the site so closely that we can see all the details.
The team cannot touch defeat
The project has become the largest underwater scan in history. In this, 7,00,000 pictures were taken from every angle to create an accurate 3D map of the underwater world. A necklace made of megalodon teeth can be seen in one of the photographs. The extinct shark species Megalodon is one of the largest species in history. An agreement between the US and British government does not allow artifacts to be removed from the wreck, so the team was not allowed to touch the necklace.
AI will trace the owner of the necklace
According to Magellan, artificial intelligence along with ‘facial recognition’ will be used to identify the owner of the necklace. The company will contact the relatives of 2200 passengers aboard the ship if it sinks. A report in The Independent said that the company will also analyze footage of passengers when they boarded the ship, specifically their faces and their clothing. The Titanic sank during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York after hitting an iceberg in April 1912, killing more than 1,500 passengers.
