Anger over illegal encroachment
Earlier in a case, the Delhi High Court had termed encroachment on public land as akin to robbery and asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to use drone and satellite images and other technology to maintain surveillance. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora of the High Court expressed displeasure over unauthorized construction near the centrally protected monuments Nizamuddin ki Baoli and Barakhambha Tomb and said that there was a ‘serious lapse in the discharge of duty’ by the officials, who did not take action despite receiving information from the police and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
