On the eve of Independence Day 2024, President of India Draupadi Murmu has approved gallantry and service medals for various personnel of the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces, Police, Fire, Home Guards and Civil Defence etc. Indian Army Colonel Manpreet Singh, who lost his life fighting terrorists in Anantnag last year, has also been awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously. 103 medals to Armed Forces and CAPFs
President Draupadi Murmu has approved 103 gallantry awards for personnel of the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces on the eve of Independence Day 2024. These include four Kirti Chakras including three posthumously, 18 Shaurya Chakras including four posthumously, one bar to the Army Medal (Gallantry), 63 Army Medals (Gallantry) including two posthumously, 11 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and six Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry). Along with this, President Draupadi Murmu has also approved 39 Mentions in Dispatch including Army Dog Kent (posthumously) for significant contribution in various military operations. These operations include Operation Rakshak, Operation Snow Leopard, Operation Sahayata, Operation Hifazat, Operation Orchid and Operation Kachchal.

1037 personnel awarded gallantry and service medals
A total of 1037 personnel of Police, Fire, Home Guard and Civil Defence (HG & CD) and Correctional Services have been awarded gallantry and service medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2024. Out of 213 gallantry medals (Gallantry), 208 have been awarded to police personnel. These include 31 personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police, 17-17 personnel from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, 15 personnel from Chhattisgarh, 12 personnel from Madhya Pradesh, 07 personnel from Jharkhand, Punjab and Telangana, 52 personnel from CRPF, 14 personnel from SSB, 10 personnel from CISF, 06 personnel from BSF and the remaining policemen are from other states / union territories and CAPFs. Apart from this, 03 gallantry medals and 01 GM awards have been given to Delhi and Jharkhand fire service personnel respectively. At the same time, 01 gallantry medal has been awarded to Uttar Pradesh HG and CD personnel.
94 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service
Out of these, out of 94 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), 75 have been awarded to Police Service, 08 to Fire Service, 08 to Civil Defence and Home Guard Service and 03 to Correctional Service. Out of 729 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM), 624 have been awarded to Police Service, 47 to Fire Service, 47 to Civil Defence and Home Guard Service and 11 to Correctional Service. Distinguished Service Medal is awarded for particularly distinguished record in service. Whereas, Meritorious Service Medal is awarded for valuable service characterized by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
