Dubai: Iran on Thursday launched a five-day registration campaign for candidates wishing to contest the June 28 presidential election. The aim of this campaign is to elect a successor to the late Ibrahim Raisi. Iranian President Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash along with seven others earlier this month. The election is taking place at a time when Iran is grappling with the aftermath of the May 19 accident. Tensions have escalated between Tehran and the US. Along with this, protests are also taking place in the country against the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.
Who makes the final decision
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (85) has the final word on all matters of the nation. During this five-day period, people aged between 40 and 75 and with at least a master’s degree will register as potential candidates. All candidates will ultimately be approved by Iran’s 12-member Guardian Council, which includes clerics and jurists and works under Khamenei’s supervision. The council has never accepted a female candidate, nor anyone who has sought radical changes to the country’s system of governance.
Who conducts elections in Iran?
Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced the start of the registration period. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the country’s police, conducts elections in Iran without any strong international monitoring. Vahidi said, “These elections will also be held with full security and transparency, like the parliamentary elections, with good competition and wide participation of all people.”
