Seoul: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday thanked Kim Jong Un for supporting his action on Ukraine before leaving for a summit in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. During this, Putin also said that both countries will work together to deal with US-led sanctions. Putin is arriving in North Korea for a two-day visit and his remarks have been published in North Korea’s state media. Putin’s visit is taking place at a time when both countries are facing tension with America and have become isolated from the whole world.
‘Unilateral and illegal sanctions’
Russian President Putin, who is making his first visit to North Korea in 24 years, said he appreciated North Korea’s firm support for his invasion of Ukraine. Putin also said Russia and North Korea will explore trade opportunities and develop payment systems “that will not be under the control of Western countries” and that they will jointly oppose sanctions against the countries. He also termed these sanctions as “unilateral and illegal”.
Cooperation will increase in the field of tourism, culture and education
North Korea is facing heavy economic sanctions from the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear weapons and missile tests, while the United States and its Western allies have imposed sanctions on Russia over its aggression against Ukraine. Putin said the two countries will also increase cooperation in tourism, culture and education. (AP)
