New Delhi. The country is currently in the grip of T20 World Cup fever and it seems that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi likes the T20 style a lot. This is being said because after a mutual consensus could not be reached, Congress fielded its candidate for Lok Sabha Speaker on behalf of the opposition alliance ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ (India), but this move of theirs now seems to be backfiring. In fact, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Sharad Pawar’s faction of NCP have not made it clear whether they will support ‘India’ or not.
Let us tell you that there is no consensus between the government and the opposition parties regarding the selection of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The ruling NDA alliance has again nominated the current Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla as its candidate. At the same time, the opposition parties led by the Congress have nominated K. Suresh as their candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. The proposal for the post of Speaker of both the leaders has been filed.
TMC claimed that no discussions were held with it before nominating K Suresh as the joint candidate of opposition alliance ‘India’ for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Suresh filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s election on Tuesday morning. Trinamool Congress was not among the components of the ‘India’ alliance that signed his nomination papers.
When Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was asked about the party’s stand on this issue, he said that his party has not been contacted in this regard so far. Banerjee said, “No one has contacted us, no talks have been held. Unfortunately a unilateral decision has been taken in this regard.” He said that the party leadership and Mamata ji (Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) will decide in this regard.
On the other hand, NCP (SP) President Sharad Pawar also created doubts in the opposition camp by saying that till now the post of Lok Sabha Speaker has remained with the ruling party. Talking to the media, he said, “I have talked to the India Alliance on the issue of Lok Sabha Speaker. I have suggested to them that you should let the ruling party conduct the election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker unopposed, the post of Speaker should be without any opposition, there is complete agreement from our side on this.” Along with this, he also suggested that the post of Deputy Speaker should go to the opposition.
The election of the Speaker will be held as soon as the Lok Sabha proceedings begin at 11 am on Wednesday. However, if we talk about the strength of numbers in the House, Om Birla is considered to be the NDA alliance candidate who will easily win the election. This is going to be the first show of strength between the government and the opposition in the Lok Sabha after the formation of the new government.
