Central Railway has requested Mumbaikars to limit their local travel. In fact, a 63-hour mega block has started from midnight of May 30 for platform extension work on the Mumbai network. This is likely to affect the services of local trains and the work schedule of lakhs of passengers. A mega block has been done for platform extension and widening work at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in South Mumbai and Thane station. According to Central Railway, this block for the work will end at 3.30 pm on Sunday.
Central Railway posted
Central Railway said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) – We strive to minimise cancellations and request passengers to limit travel, emphasizing the need to travel only when it is really necessary. Local and long distance train services are expected to be affected during the block period.
The railways have appealed to passengers to avoid travelling by local trains unless necessary. Rajneesh Goyal, divisional railway manager of Mumbai division of Central Railway, said, a 63-hour mega block for widening of platform number 5 and 6 in Thane has started from Thursday midnight, while a 36-hour block for work related to expansion of platform number 10 and 11 in CSMT will start from Friday midnight.
Passengers will get facility
After increasing the width of the platform, facilities like escalators or wide stairs can be provided for foot over bridges (FOBs). Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, said that a total of 72 mail-express trains and 956 suburban trains will be canceled on the main and harbor corridors from Friday to Sunday. Many mail-express and suburban trains will be short-terminated and short-originated from Wadala, Dadar, Thane, Pune, Panvel and Nashik stations. Central Railway said that we request all establishments to allow their employees to work from home or work in any other possible way to reduce the number of passengers these days.
Request for running additional buses
The railways have requested Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to run additional buses for the convenience of passengers. At CSMT, the length of platform numbers 10 and 11 has been increased to run trains with 24 coaches, up from 16 coaches earlier. The Central Railway said the blocks are necessary for upgradation of infrastructure and long-term benefits. Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport said it plans to run 254 additional services on nine routes with 43 additional buses during the mega-block period.
