New Delhi. In a major change recently made by Indian Railways, passengers traveling in Vande Bharat trains will now be given half liter Rail Neer bottle instead of the earlier 1 liter Rail Neer bottle. This change has been made with the aim of reducing wastage of drinking water and using resources more efficiently. Now every passenger in Vande Bharat train will be given a 500 ml Rail Neer packaged drinking water bottle. Apart from this, passengers will also have the option to ask for an additional 500 ml bottle from the train staff without any charge.
According to a report in ‘Times of India’, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, Deepak Kumar, said that the aim of this decision is to reduce unnecessary consumption of potable water. By providing small 500 ml bottles, Railways intends to better match consumption to save water on short distance journeys typically associated with Vande Bharat trains as compared to long distance journeys like Rajdhani.
This step of Railways also shows the success of similar initiative implemented on Shatabdi trains. Where passengers were also given Rail Neer bottles of 500 ml instead of big 1 liter bottles, keeping in mind the limited water requirement for journeys lasting up to 8.5 hours. In a comprehensive effort to promote water conservation, Central Railway is actively reusing the water used for cleaning coaches and platforms. At present, Railways is reusing about one crore liters of treated water every day through 32 water treatment plants.
Apart from this, Railways has established rain water conservation units at 158 places. Along with this, construction of three automatic coach-washing plants has further contributed to water conservation efforts. Apart from this, Central Railway has undertaken huge afforestation projects by planting five lakh trees at various places to restore and maintain the local ecosystem.
