Indian Railways has earned huge money from the cancellation of waiting list tickets. The figures are witness to this. From the year 2021 to January 2024, Railways has earned a total of Rs 1229.85 crore from waiting list ticket cancellation. This has come to light in the information sought under the Right to Information. Statistics have also revealed that the Railways’ earnings under this item are increasing every year. In the year 2021, Railways earned Rs 242.68 crore from the cancellation of about 2.53 crore waiting tickets. Similarly, in the year 2022, 4.6 crore such tickets were canceled due to which the world’s largest employer earned an income of Rs 439.16 crore.
Earn Rs 505 crore in the year 2023
According to the news, in the year 2023, Indian Railways has earned Rs 505 crore from such canceled 5.26 crore tickets. Similarly, in January 2024, 45.86 lakh waiting list tickets were canceled and this generated an income of Rs 43 crore. According to the news of Times Now News, the latest data shows that last year, 96.18 lakh tickets were affected between Diwali week i.e. November 5 and November 17. In this, almost half i.e. 47.82 lakh tickets were canceled by the passengers who were in the waiting list from all types of quotas. Railways earned Rs 10.37 crore from this cancellation charge.
Non-refundable charge in case of cancellation
Please note here that on cancellation of RAC/Waitlist ticket, a non-refundable charge of Rs 60 per passenger is deducted. Similarly, a non-refundable charge of Rs 30 has to be paid in AC class on e-tickets purchased from the IRCTC online platform (when booking through net banking or card). Similarly, if you book an e-ticket through UPI, you have to pay a charge of Rs 20.
Service charge for tickets booked through net banking or card in non-AC class is Rs 15. If booking is done through UPI, then a service charge of Rs 10 has to be paid. That means, all these charges are not refunded to the passengers on ticket cancellation. This amount becomes a source of income for the Railways.
