Lahore: Lahore in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Thursday broke the 44-year record of maximum rainfall in a day during the monsoon. This led to flooding of roads, houses and even government hospitals. Three people have died due to heavy rains. Giving information, officials said that more rain is expected in the next few days. Officials have also warned of flooding in the Jhelum river in Mangla.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesperson Mazhar Hussain, the 44-year-old record for maximum rainfall in a day during monsoon was broken on Thursday when Lahore airport area recorded a maximum of 337 mm rainfall. “Intermittent heavy rainfall is expected in upper parts of the country from August 1 to 6 due to the monsoon advance from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal,” the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said. “The rains inundated roads, houses and even government hospitals, disrupting power supply in Lahore. Three people were killed in rain-related incidents in the city,” officials said.

Flight operations were suspended for several hours
Flight operations in Lahore were also suspended for several hours due to the heavy rains. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the concerned authorities to remain in the area round the clock to drain out water from rain-logged areas. The PDMA said that water level in rivers, dams and springs is rising due to monsoon rains. “Moderate to high level flooding may be observed in Jhelum river at Mangla from August 1 to 4,” the PDMA said. A total of 24 people have died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since July 29 in incidents related to monsoon rains, taking the total death toll in July to nearly 100 across the country. (Language)
