Around midnight yesterday, a crowd of about a thousand people broke the gates of Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital and forcibly entered the hospital and destroyed the male and female emergency wards. The mob destroyed valuable machines, medicines, computers, CCTV cameras and also vandalized the doctors’ restroom and police barracks. The mob set fire to police vehicles and destroyed the doctors’ protest site. In fact, on Wednesday night, thousands of people had reached the protest site to show solidarity with the agitating doctors, and the miscreants took advantage of this. Kolkata Police had to release tear gas and lathicharge. In the morning, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal alleged that the media was running a false and well-planned campaign against the police and this incident was the result of that. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew MP Abhishek Banerjee urged the Kolkata Police to arrest the miscreants within 24 hours, no matter which party they belonged to. BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari alleged in his post on social media that Trinamool Congress goons were behind this violence and all this happened at the behest of Mamata Banerjee. The protesting doctors present at the spot alleged that these rioters wanted to vandalize the seminar hall on the upper floor, where the female doctor was raped on 9 August and then brutally murdered.
Mamata Banerjee’s own party also raised its voice against this brutal murder. Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Shekhar Rai joined the protest against the barbaric murder of the doctor. Sukhendu Shekhar Rai said that the Kolkata police is useless, the police was negligent in this case, tampered with the evidence. Rai said that what can be expected from the police that reached the crime scene after three days with a dog squad. Protests are still going on in the entire country against the murder of the doctor. Doctors took out candle marches in many states, political parties protested. Now the biggest resentment is about why Mamata Banerjee has not taken any action against Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College. The Kolkata Police did not even consider it necessary to interrogate Sandeep Ghosh. Instead of removing Sandeep Ghosh, the West Bengal government transferred him and made him the Principal of National Medical College. Angry with this, the students locked the house and office of the Principal of National Medical College. Now political parties and protesting doctors are demanding the arrest of Dr. Sandeep Ghosh. However, CBI has started investigating this case, took Sanjay Roy, accused of the murder of the doctor, into its custody, collected evidence from the seminar hall of the medical college. Now CBI will question all those people who were present in the hospital that night when the doctor was murdered. But the biggest question is why Mamata’s police first called this heinous murder a suicide, then an unnatural death, why did the police try to destroy the evidence, who is that person in Mamata’s government who is trying to save Principal Sandeep Ghosh.
What secret does Sandeep Ghosh know due to which no action was taken against him despite complaints in several cases? There are not one but several reasons for raising questions on Sandeep Ghosh. Firstly, as the principal of the medical college, he tried to suppress the entire case, tried to give the colour of suicide to the murder. Secondly, the old track record of Dr. Sandeep Ghosh is also very bad but due to his political connections, no action was ever taken against him. Sandeep Ghosh is an orthopedic doctor by profession and at the time when this incident happened, he was the principal of R.G. Kar Medical College. He was on this post for 4 years and in these four years, several complaints were made against him. The matter went to the vigilance department. He was transferred twice but after a few days he was reinstated as the principal in the same medical college. His influence and political connections can be gauged from this. Many allegations of corruption have been leveled against Dr. Sandeep Ghosh. He is accused of selling bio-medical waste in an illegal manner, he is accused of scam in hospital parking and he is accused of taking bribe in various tenders. Dr Akhtar Ali, who has worked in RG Kar Medical College, said that Sandeep Ghosh used to run a racket of commission in the hospital, he used to take 20% commission in tenders and if anyone raised voice against him, he used to threaten to fail the junior doctors and used to call junior doctors to the guest house and make them drink alcohol for his work.
On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the entire country is shocked by the gruesome murder of the lady doctor in Kolkata. The attempt to get justice for the victim and to save the accused raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration. Rahul Gandhi wrote that this incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like a medical college, then with what confidence should parents send their daughters outside to study? After Rahul’s post, Mamata Banerjee responded. Mamata said that people of Congress and CPM are questioning her, but the leaders of these parties should tell what they did when atrocities were committed on women in their states. Mamata said that she wants to tell all political parties not to do politics in such cases. Mamata Banerjee said that when she got the news of the murder of the lady doctor in Kolkata, she was in Jhargram at that time. She spoke to the Police Commissioner at the same time, instructed him to immediately go to the spot and investigate and arrest all the criminals. Mamata said that she spoke to the lady doctor’s parents, consoled them, assured them of getting justice. It is surprising that the police did not even question the principal of the medical college where such a heinous crime took place. Instead of removing the principal, he was made the principal of another college. Who is the one who is protecting Sandeep Ghosh? Does Sandeep Ghosh owe this much to anyone? Does he have some secret hidden in his heart?
On Tuesday, I realized how barbaric and horrific was the cruelty that was inflicted on the doctor’s daughter in the medical college, when I was told the details of the postmortem report in this case. For a moment, my soul trembled. When the postmortem was mentioned, my heart jumped into my mouth. The heart cries thinking what the parents of that innocent girl must be going through. This case is very serious, there should be no politics in such a case, nor should there be any attempt to save anyone.
