The use of earphones, earbuds or headphones is continuously increasing in the metro cities of India. WHO says that deafness due to listening devices is increasing rapidly.
You must have seen people in metro, train, park or any public place wearing earphones and being completely oblivious of the surrounding environment. Sometimes something is happening around them but its sound does not reach their ears. This happens due to earphones, earbuds or other listening devices, but imagine what if people really become deaf in the future? What will happen if people are sitting together but are unable to hear each other’s conversation? You may be scared thinking about this but it is going to be true. The World Health Organization report states that in the coming time more than 100 crore people can become deaf in the world and no epidemic but a hobby of people will be responsible for this.
of the WHO Make Listening Safe Guidelines It has been estimated that by 2050, more than 1 billion youth around the world may become deaf. The age of these youth will also be between 12 and 35 years. Guidelines say that this will happen due to our poor listening habits.

This hobby is getting heavy…
The guidelines state that currently around 50 crore people between the ages of 12 and 35 are suffering from the problem of hearing loss or deafness due to various reasons. Of these, 25 percent are those who have become accustomed to listening to something or the other continuously at high volume on their personal devices such as earphones, earbuds, headphones. While around 50 percent are those who are exposed to loud music played at entertainment places, clubs, discotheques, cinema, fitness classes, bars or other public places for a long time. In such a situation, the hobby of listening to loud music or excessive use of ear devices can make you deaf.
What is the volume of the devices?
Generally, the volume level of personal devices ranges from 75 decibels to 136 decibels. Its maximum level may vary in different countries. However, users should keep the volume of their devices between 75 dB to 105 dB and use it for a limited time. Going above this is dangerous for the ears.
How much volume is safe?
Dr. BP Sharma, who was a professor of ENT at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, says that the volume coming from the devices is also very high. The safest volume for the ears is 20 to 30 decibels. This is the volume at which two people usually sit and talk quietly. Being constantly exposed to more sound than this starts damaging the sensory cells of the ears.
Deafness caused by noise cannot be cured.
Dr. Sharma says that the worst thing is that the deafness caused by the use of devices is never cured. Due to continuous and long exposure to loud sound, the high frequency nerve gets damaged. It is not reversible. There is no surgery for it nor is there any medicine that can cure the nerve. Therefore, prevention is the only cure to avoid deafness.
