Beijing. China started the policy of reform and opening-up on December 18, 1978. Since then there have been remarkable changes in the country. This process has significantly affected not only China, but also the world.
Economic changes:
China has changed from a planned economy to a market-oriented economy. Its GDP has grown from 364.5 billion yuan in 1978 to over 100 trillion yuan in 2020, making China the world’s second largest economy. Crores of people have been brought out of poverty, due to which the standard of living has improved significantly. As the phrase “Made in China” has become synonymous with global manufacturing, the country has positioned itself as the “world’s factory”.
Progress in Science and Technology:
China has made significant breakthroughs in various fields, including aerospace, high-speed rail, and 5G communications technology. Remarkably, Chang’e A-5 successfully collected lunar soil. China’s high-speed rail network extends over 46,000 kilometers, accounting for two-thirds of the total global high-speed rail mileage.
Growing international influence:
China’s international presence has increased significantly. As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China actively participates in global governance. The “Belt and Road” initiative has received responses from more than 100 countries, facilitating global infrastructure development. Additionally, China is important in coordinating efforts to combat climate change and prevent pandemics.
Cultural influence:
Chinese culture is gaining international recognition. The establishment of Confucius Institutes around the world has helped spread Chinese cultural values, while Chinese films, music and literature are becoming increasingly influential globally.
China has made extraordinary progress in reform and opening-up over the past 40 years. However, it still faces challenges such as unbalanced and inadequate development, as it remains in the primary stage of socialism. Looking to the future, China aims to continue its contribution to global peace and development while deepening its reforms.
