The Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a petition holding that Indian women are too possessive about their husbands and can never share him with any other woman.
A bench of Justice Rahul Chaturvedi made the observation in a case in which the trial court sentenced a man to the charge of abetment to suicide of his wife, which was upheld by the high court.
The court said that the accused Sushil Kumar had married for the third time and apparently this was the only reason why his wife committed suicide. Further, the court said that it could be a “convincing reason” for a wife to commit suicide that her husband should secretly marry another woman without informing her.
According to Live Live, during the hearing, the High Court bench observed that “they (Indian women) are very possessive about their husbands. It will be the biggest blow to any married woman that her husband is shared by some other woman. or he is going to marry some other woman. It would be impossible to expect any kind of understanding from him in such a dire situation. Exactly the same has happened in this case as well.”
The deceased woman had lodged an FIR at Manduadih police station in Varanasi against her husband Sushil Kumar and six members of his family under several sections of the IPC. This included charges of causing hurt, threatening and remarrying during the lifetime of the spouses.
In this FIR, the woman has accused the husband that her husband was already married with two children, but he got married for the third time without getting divorced. Along with this, she also accused her husband and in-laws of mentally harassing her.
Shortly after the FIR was lodged, the woman committed suicide by consuming poison. While investigating the case, the police filed a charge sheet in the district court making the woman’s husband and family members accused, after which the court convicted the accused and sentenced them.
