Iran has long been a key ally of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted on December 8 following attacks launched by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militant coalition.

Al-Shaibani, who was born in 1987, was appointed on Saturday by the Syrian interim administration, which is backed by HTS.
