New Delhi . Retail inflation in India has come down to 3.34 percent in March. This is the lowest level of retail inflation since August 2019. This information was given by the Ministry of Statistics on Tuesday. During March, the food inflation slowed down to 2.69 percent. This is the lowest level after November 2021.
The official statement issued by the ministry said that during March 2025, the strong decline in headline inflation and food inflation is mainly due to the fall in vegetables, eggs, pulses, meat and fish, grains and milk prices.
The food products whose prices have declined the biggest in March, including ginger (-38.11 percent), tomatoes (-34.96 percent), cauliflower (-25.99 percent), cumin (-25.86 percent) and garlic (-25.22 percent) were included.
Housing inflation has been 3.03 percent on an annual basis. It was 2.91 percent in February.
The housing index includes only urban areas.
According to the data, fuel and energy inflation rates have been 1.48 percent in March. While the education rate has been 3.98 percent.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said last week that retail inflation in the country has been decreasing in recent months. The Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank has reduced its forecast of inflation from 4.2 percent to 4 percent for 2025-26.
He further said that along with the strong incoming kharif, it is expected to bring permanent softening in the food inflation.
The RBI Governor said that the decline in crude oil prices is an auspicious sign for inflation outlook. Keeping in mind all these factors and following the normal monsoon, retail inflation for FY 2025-26 is expected to be at 4 percent, with the first quarter 3.6 percent, the second quarter 3.9 percent, the third quarter 3.8 percent and the fourth quarter 4.4 percent.
