The whole country is in a state of shock due to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors in many parts of the country are on strike demanding better security and facilities in hospitals. They are raising the slogan ‘No Safety-No Work’. Meanwhile, there is a good news for them. In fact, a task force formed by the National Medical Council (NMC) has said in its proposal that to ensure equality and promote job satisfaction, doctors across the country should get salary and retirement facilities like Delhi-based AIIMS.
This report has been given by the ‘National Task Force on Mental Health and Wellbeing of Medical Students’. In its report, it has demanded standardization of policies citing the pay scales of UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The task force said that trainees, PG students, senior residents, super-speciality students and medical teachers in all medical colleges should be paid as per the AIIMS pay scale, irrespective of whether they are private, public, state, central, deemed university or any other type of institution. The report said that private practice should be prohibited for medical college professors to ensure quality of medical education.
It says that standardization of pay scales, retirement and rotational department head policies across institutions ensures equity and attracts high-quality faculty. The quality of education can be maintained by banning private practice for medical teachers and providing non-practice allowance. It says that the pay scale of AIIMS Delhi will prevent medical teachers from making any compromise in their teaching duties and will maintain the sanctity of education.
