Ricky Ponting
In July this year, Ricky Ponting parted ways with Delhi Capitals as coach. After serving as the head coach of Delhi Capitals for 7 years, Ricky Ponting parted ways with the franchise. Franchise co-owner Parth Jindal had confirmed that he wanted to appoint an Indian coach to identify and develop local talent for which Ponting was not available. After parting ways with Delhi, there were speculations about Ponting joining the England team but now he has made it clear that he actually has no intention of doing so.
Ponting ready to return to IPL
Meanwhile, 49-year-old Ponting has expressed his desire to return to the IPL in 2025. Many franchises are looking for new coaches and Ponting can fit into their system. Before joining the Capitals, he was with the Mumbai Indians team. Ponting said in an episode of ICC Review, “I would love to coach in the IPL again. I have had a great time here, whether it was as a player in the early days or a few years spent as head coach in Mumbai. And then I spent seven seasons in Delhi, which unfortunately did not really work out. I think my going there was an attempt to bring something good to the team and it did not happen.”
DC’s first choice is Indian coach
“Delhi Capitals made it clear that they wanted to go in a different direction with someone who could give them a bit more time during the off-season, really more than anything else, so that they could spend a bit more time in India with a lot of local players. I couldn’t do that. I think they will probably go with an Indian coach,” Ponting said.
Ponting thanked DC for giving him the opportunity to work with the franchise and some great players. He wished them all the best for the future and said that he is available to coach an IPL team in the future. “I wish them all the best, but as I said there may be some opportunities for me in the next few months and I would love to coach in the IPL again next season,” Ponting said.
