Washington: North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has ruled out the possibility of Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Kamala Harris becoming its vice-presidential candidate. Two people familiar with the matter have given this information. Cooper has expressed apprehension that if he is elected as the vice-presidential candidate, his lieutenant governor from the Republican Party will take over the reins of the state if he goes out of the state. Kamala Harris has not yet been declared as the official candidate of the Democratic Party.

Cooper and Harris have a good relationship

Both people familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Cooper, 67, has withdrawn his name ahead of Harris’ search for a potential vice presidential candidate. Cooper, a former chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, has been close to Harris since they were both state attorneys general.

Robinson may get the command

Under North Carolina’s constitution, the state’s lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson, can become acting governor and assume power for Democrats if Cooper leaves the state. Cooper has feared that Robinson could take control of the state if he travels out of state to campaign. The New York Times first reported that Cooper had withdrawn from the vice presidential race. Harris’ campaign team has declined to comment on this. (AP)
