Volcano is once again spewing fire in Indonesia. This time Ruang Volcano seems active. Due to the activities taking place in the volcano, precautionary measures are also being taken. In this sequence, at least 800 people have been evacuated to safe place after the explosions in Ruang Volcano in North Sulawesi province of Indonesia. Due to the volcano, the sky has been covered with clouds of lava and ash for the last several days. The volcano, located on Ruang Island, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the provincial capital Manado, has erupted more than three times since Tuesday.
Alert level raised
Heruningatyas Desi Purnamasari, an Indonesian official who monitors the volcano, told Reuters that authorities had raised the alert level to the second-highest level following increased activity. Mount Ruang’s eruption was triggered by recent earthquakes on the island, he said, with dangerous and “explosively hot clouds” rising 1.8 km (1.1 miles) into the sky from the mountain. “We have to evacuate the islanders as there could be more eruptions. No activity is allowed within four kilometers of the crater,” he said. Ruang Island is home to about 838 residents, most of whom have now been evacuated to the nearby island of Tagulandang, he said.
lava flow is formed
Footage seen by Reuters shows a continuous flow of lava down the mountain, with clouds of brown ash rising above the volcano’s crater. Also worth noting is that Indonesia straddles the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area of high seismic activity. This region lies over several tectonic plates. Earlier in the month of December 2023, there was an explosion in Marapi volcano in which 11 climbers died.
