United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. During this, the matter of mediation will also be discussed.
Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced on Friday that Putin and Zelensky would “receive” the UN chief. After this, there will be a working meeting with the Foreign Ministers.
Guterres will first visit Moscow on April 25 and then Ukraine on April 28. But so far the announcement of the meeting with Zelensky and Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba did not specify where the meetings would take place.
Because of Moscow’s veto powers in the Security Council, the United Nations is facing one of its most serious crises to act against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Following the announcement on Friday morning’s visit to Moscow, Guterres’ associate spokesman, Ari Kaneko, told the media: “He wants to discuss with the leadership what steps should be taken to help the people and silence the guns. Joe.” People want to come out, let them come out and find a safe way out.”
Guterres wrote letters to both Russia and Ukraine asking them to visit the countries in an effort to end the war, as several diplomatic initiatives by international leaders had proved unsuccessful.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed for an end to the war during a phone conversation with Putin and Zelensky. Representatives of Russia and Ukraine are holding talks online in Belarus and Turkey but have failed to reach a solution.
Russian news service TASS quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Friday that progress in Russian-Ukrainian talks was slow. Guterres canceled a tour of Nigeria next week to travel to Russia and Ukraine.
Guterres’ visit will come at a time when Russia has intensified its attack on Ukraine. Moscow rejected the UN chief’s call for a ceasefire this week.
