The Government of India is preparing to give a big relief to the medical students returning home after saving their lives from the battlefield of Russia-Ukraine under Operation Ganga. The Central Government has decided to make major changes in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licensing Act in this regard, so that the future of children returned from Ukraine is not spoiled and time is not wasted. The Central Government has asked the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Medical Commission (NMC) and NITI Aayog (NITI Aayog) to explore the possibilities of providing relief and help under the FMGL (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Act-2021 in this regard.
Along with this, it will also have to be found out that what arrangements can be made for the students who have returned from Ukraine to study in private colleges in the country and abroad? According to sources, soon to find a solution, officials of the Union Health Ministry, Ministry of External Affairs, National Medical Commission (NMC) and NITI Aayog will hold a meeting to discuss the options and explore the possibilities at the ground level to provide relief on humanitarian grounds.
What are the FMGL provisions of NMC?
As per the provisions of the FMGL Act 2021 of the National Medical Commission, the entire course of studies, training and internship or clerkship etc. should all be done outside India in the same foreign institution, university or college. Along with this, the provisions also state that no part of medical training and internship can be done in India or in any country other than the country from where the primary medical qualification i.e. graduate level has been completed. .
No rule to accommodate medical students
The official source said that at present there are no norms and rules for accommodating medical students under the National Medical Commission rules, which allow students studying abroad to be accommodated in Indian medical colleges or institutions in the middle of the academic session. give permission. However, keeping in view such exceptional circumstances, the issue will be reviewed on humanitarian grounds and the possibility of providing sympathetic relief will be explored.
Will have to work hard to find a solution
The authorities will have to ponder over the future of the students returning from Ukraine and those who have returned from China in the past, then the possibilities of a solution will be explored somewhere. It is also not easy to explore the possibility of relaxation in the provisions of NMC or allowing such students to complete their courses in private medical colleges or transfer to colleges in other countries. According to officials, Ukraine offers a six-year MBBS course and a two-year internship program and is much more affordable than private medical colleges in India.
