New Delhi: India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar spoke on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. This conversation between the two leaders took place about ten days after PM Modi’s visit to Moscow. At the same time, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that the conversation was focused on further developing bilateral relations. The phone conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries took place against the backdrop of criticism of Modi’s Moscow visit on July 8-9 by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrote in a post on the social media platform X, “This afternoon I had a good conversation with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. There was a discussion about further developing our bilateral relations.” At the same time, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Kuleba also said that the talks discussed further developing Ukraine-India relations. He wrote in a post on X, “After my visit to New Delhi earlier this year and the meeting between President Zelensky and Prime Minister Modi in Italy, I spoke to my Indian counterpart Dr. Jaishankar about further enhancing Ukraine-India bilateral relations.”
Zelensky had expressed disappointment over PM Modi’s visit to Russia
Let us tell you that on July 9, Ukrainian President Zelensky had termed PM Modi’s visit to Moscow as a ‘big’ disappointment and a ‘devastating setback’ to peace efforts. In a post on ‘X’, Zelensky specifically mentioned Russia’s missile attacks on Ukraine, including the attack on a children’s hospital in Kiev. Zelensky had said, “A Russian missile attacked Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital, targeting young cancer patients. Many were buried under the rubble.” He said, “It is extremely disappointing to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hugging the world’s bloodiest criminal in Moscow on such a day and a devastating setback to peace efforts.”
PM Modi’s visit to Russia
In his first visit to Russia after the attack on Ukraine, Modi visited Moscow on July 8 and 9. In his summit talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi gave a clear message that the solution to the Ukraine conflict is not possible on the battlefield and peace talks do not succeed amid bombs, guns and bullets.
